Ukraine supporters in Vancouver mark two years since Russian invasion

More than 1,000 Ukraine supporters turned out at the Vancouver Art Gallery Saturday to mark two years since the Russian invasion began. Postmedia photographer Jason Payne was at the scene to capture the sombre mood.

“For two years, the Ukrainian people have bravely resisted, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces have fought heroically against a ruthless, well-armed Russian enemy,” said Alexandra Chyczij, president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

Chyczij said more than 8,000 of Ukrainian people are still tortured in Russian prisons while more than 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcefully deported to Russia.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Western leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to Kyiv Saturday as Ukrainian forces run low on ammunition and foreign aid hangs in the balance.

Allies from the EU and the Group of Seven wealthy democracies rallied around Kyiv to express solidarity, with Zelenskyy joining a virtual G7 meeting Saturday and four world leaders traveling to Ukraine’s war-weary capital.

Ottawa has committed to send Kyiv $3.02 billion in military and economic aid this year.
