Armoured house hits market near Naramata

A house nestled in the fire-scarred hills above Okanagan Lake that’s been built to withstand any future infernos is on the market for a cool $3.8 million.

The home at Lot 9 7080 Glenfir Rd. just north of Naramata was designed by Toronto architect Omar Gandhi and completed in 2021. It sits on 11 acres of land that was scorched in the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park wildfire.

Most notable is the steel armour around the lower portion of the 1,400-square-foot, two-bed, two-bath home.

“This architectural masterpiece, wrapped in a weathering steel ‘shell,’ is designed to withstand the extremes of its environment, including the risk of forest fires prevalent in the area,” says the marketing company hired by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada to help sell the property.

“Its elevated position and absence of ground-floor windows further enhance its defensive capabilities, while deep overhangs protect it from extreme weather conditions.”

Gandhi, described in a 2021 piece by the Globe and Mail as Canada’s “next top architect,” wasn’t available for an interview.

The property was valued at $1.4 million as of July 2023 by BC Assessment.
