Shawnigan Lake RCMP are investigating a single-vehicle crash Wednesday that killed a former Victoria hockey player.
Mike Hammond, 33, played professionally for several British hockey teams and teams in Europe.
Police said the crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. on Shawnigan Lake Road, near Baden Powell Road.
Initial evidence indicates a Porsche Boxster went off the road and hit a tree.
The B.C. Coroners Service is also investigating.
Hammond began his junior hockey career with the Victoria Grizzlies of the B.C. Hockey League in 2007-2008 before playing two seasons with the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the BCHL from 2009 to 2011.
This summer, he was playing ball hockey for the Victoria Devils club.
In ice hockey, he played with the Nottingham Panthers of the British Elite Hockey League this past season.
